The Vikings were great sailors. That said there is no information about the navigation instruments they used. Some say they used the sun and others say they used the stars to guide them. Recently it was discovered by archaeologists that the Vikings used sundials. This means they could have been using them as compasses to guide their route and direction.

How was Life on a Viking Ship?

You may probably be wondering how life on a Viking ship was like. Life on a Viking ship at sea was not as rosy as you would think. First, these Norsemen were using open ships on a windy, cold and sometimes rainy weather, which makes you wonder how they survived.

Well one of the things that the Viking did was landing their ships on the nearby land at night. They would then pitch some woolen tents onshore or they would take the sail down and put it down across the ship which would make a tent that they could use to sleep under.

So what would happen when the night came and the Viking ships were far away from land? Well, the Vikings could sleep on the deck and cover themselves with a blanket made from animal skin.

When the Vikings were out sailing they could eat salted or dried fish or meat. The only time they would cook meat is when they docked on land. The Vikings also loved to drink beer, sour milk and definitely water when at sea.
